School Mission and Ethos
St John's was founded in 1975 to serve the Christian and non-Christian children within Rhondda Cynon Taf and the surrounding counties. The Christian ethos plays a large part of the school's life and has well-established links with local clergy within the Ministry Area from which children are admitted to the school, as well as from the wider areas within the Diocese.
Each year group celebrates a Eucharist service, at least, once per term. In addition, local clergy lead whole school celebrations of Holy Eucharist and at other important festivals. They provide support and leadership for the weekly year Eucharist services held at the school. They also visit the school to support the work of the Religious Education Curriculum area and to provide insight into church activities, the sacraments and contribute to the teaching. On occasions clergy will lead assemblies or special services. They also respond to our requests for pastoral help and guidance for individual pupils or groups of pupils who may feel the need for such care. Religious Education and Collective Worship are a cornerstone of the life and work of the school.
The school also has close links with St Elvan's, a large church situated in Aberdare's town centre. St Elvan's is usually the host for whole-school services and major school events, such as the annual Prize Giving ceremony.
Our vision is to prepare each pupil to develop the skills and attributes to become the person they have been "called to be". As an unashamedly Christian school, our mission, values and purpose shape our behaviours.

School Prayer
Look down,
O loving saviour,
upon us Thy children,
and make this School a blessing to
us all.
Give us attentive ears to hear,
willing hearts to learn,
and ready wills to obey.
Teach us how to pray and lead us to Thyself,
so that we may know thee as our
Saviour and worship thee as our King.
Amen
